Balqees Momodu (@ballymomodu) is on a mission to make a name for herself as a modest, hijab-wearing model in the fashion industry. In an exclusive interview with modestish, the aspiring Nigerian model, who is signed to Astria Models, talks about what inspired her to take on the modest lifestyle and what one trend she will never try (hint: you can guess this one!)
1.What attracts you to the idea of dressing modestly? Any personal turning point in your life that inspired you to embark on a more modest lifestyle?
Firstly, it is the decree of the Almighty. Secondly, Do you not see the elegance that comes with it? I love it! The turning point in my life was the period I read this particular book. I can’t remember the name right now but it was a Wattpad story about a large Muslim family. It just changed everything.
2. Define what modesty, as a word, means to you.
Modesty to me means Moderation in your affairs. Not too much, not too little, just adequate.
3. Would you say modest fashion is a “religious” movement, a “style” movement, or both/neither?
Both. It is both a religious and a style movement for me. Like I said before, it is the Almighty’s will that we appear modest. Then we decided it didn’t have to be boring.
4. What is the last inspirational quote you posted or screenshotted on Instagram?
“If life is like a marathon, then stamina is more important than speed”.
5. What’s the one trend you’ll never try and why?
Nudity. It is completely against everything I stand for.
6. Name one book you read that made a lasting impression.
Leadership and self deception: Getting out of the box – Arbinger Institute.
7. If you had to eat one meal for dinner every day for the next week, it would be..
Fried rice and salad. #winks
8. What’s one beauty product that’s always in your cosmetics bag?
Definitely my lip gloss.
9. What’s a brand that you recently discovered and are loving?
That would be The Empress Latifah brand. Her designs are just amazing and they have that elegance that comes with them.
10. If Instagram didn’t exist, what would you spend your time doing instead?
I would read more books, and that would be lovely.
