As Muslims have begun observing the holy month of Ramadan, it means that many will be practising their faith a lot more – whether it’s through fasting, prayer, reading Quran or being more mindful, Ramadan is a time where people often come together in worship and gain a greater connection to God. This also means that many will be performing wudhu (ablution) much more often in order to worship —and for people who enjoy skincare and makeup, this may pose a small challenge! Many of us can relate to the experience of applying a full face of makeup or skincare, only to remember that we didn’t perform wudhu and must wash it all off, or the feeling of tight, dry skin after constant washing. But, I’ve foudn that a simple and easy skincare hack can help in keeping your skin healthy and hydrated throughout the month of Ramadan and beyond.
Hyaluronic acid is a skincare staple for many — it’s a substance naturally produced in the body and is critical in keeping all skin types hydrated and moisturised. It holds a thousand times its weight in water and is a great product to help maintain healthy skin. As we age, the level of hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases, but we can stimulate its production through a healthy, anti-oxidant diet, protecting our skin from sun damage and of course, skincare.
When applied to the skin (most commonly through serums and moisturisers), hyaluronic acid plumps skin cells and helps maintain a healthy moisture barrier. It is best applied to on damp skin as the product’s molecule needs moisture to work at its best, and if not, it will draw this from within your skin and potentially become dehydrating.
That’s where wudhu (ablution) comes into play — as hyaluronic acid works best on damp skin, it can be applied to the face quickly after performing wudhu in order for the molecules to absorb the water and help skin cells remain plump, hydrated and moisturised throughout ablution. It also shouldn’t disturb skincare that has already been applied, as it simply works as another layer of hydration that is much-needed to maintain healthy, soft skin.
So, step one is to perform ablution as normal, and step two is to apply a hyaluronic serum quickly afterwards – it’s that simple. It’s also recommended to follow up with another moisturiser on top, to make sure that the molecule has enough moisture to draw from.
Here are my top 3 favourite hyaluronic acid serums and produces to help keep my skin hydrated:
