Remember Aminah Ali, the talented hijabi entrepreneur and visionary behind Redefining Concepts, who we interviewed last year?
Here’s a refresher:
Aminah Ali is a trailblazer with a mission to de-stigmatise modesty and cultivate a community of support and tolerance among millennial creatives. The 22-year-old Muslim model and fashion graduate at the University of The Arts, uses what could’ve been a barrier to her pursuing her fashion career, to drive her ambitions. “I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for my hijab,” she says. Aminah is the latest hijabi creative to land on the website of ASOS — a fashion e-tailor that, time and again, displays its commitment to diversity and inclusivity by not only recruiting hijabi influencers and models, but also by partnering with modest fashion labels.
In February 2019, ASOS signed its first-ever hijabi model, Hannah Syeed, and that same year, started stocking exclusive designs by Verona, a Florida-based modest fashion label founded by Muslim women. Hijabi model Asha Mohamud fronted the collaboration when it first launched. Then, in 2020, American-Sudanese blogger Shahd Batal was the star of the brand’s modest wear campaign, which ran during Ramadan.
Aminah has become the latest hijabi face to join the ASOS girl gang. “I’m an ASOS model now,” she announced on Twitter on February 20, earning over 4,000 re-Tweets and 70,000 likes.
The question is, with Ramadan just two months away, can we expect more to come from this exciting modest partnership? After all, we’re eager to see what (and who!) ASOS has in mind for its modest wear edit this year…
