The layering of dresses over leggings has long been a styling technique of women who prefer dressing modestly. It’s an easy way to add coverage to dresses that are stylish but have shorter lengths. However, pairing dresses with leggings has not seen a stamp of approval from the mainstream fashion industry – that is, until Chanel presented its pre-fall 20201 Métiers D’Art collection on December 3.
The virtually-streamed show spotlighted a range of classic Chanel looks, such as skirt-suit sets and textured coats and cloaks in the brand’s distinctive monochrome palette. But beneath many of these dresses and skirts, was the surprising addition of leggings, in hues of blue, pink, silver and white, instantly amping up the modesty factor of these runway looks:

A soft, baby-pink shade was paired with monochrome outfits:
Most of the leggings however, appeared in a silvery-grey tone:
The question is, was this just a runway styling gimmick, or will leggings continue to be featured in the brand’s campaigns next year? More importantly, will these Chanel leggings sell in stores? Will they be stamped with the double-C logo? Will they become as coveted as the brand’s quilted handbags? Will women actually start pairing their evening wear ensembles with silver Chanel leggings? How much will they cost? So many questions — we’ll just have to wait and see, adding these to the list of unknowns for 2021…
